Step by step towards a dream career in health sciences

October 01, 2021

Rustam SHARIQ Mujtaba, Year 4, Pharmacy, dabbled in many areas ranging from student consulting to health policy and even scientific and literary writing before he discovered his interests in international relations, medical technology and entrepreneurship. He plans to embark on a career in health sciences that he hopes will marry these interests.

Here, he shares how his learning journey opened his eyes to the versatility of applying the knowledge from his studies across many different fields.

What fields of study did you consider?

Initially, I planned to study law as I enjoy writing, speaking and debating. However, I was also highly inspired by my sisters who are studying nursing and physiotherapy, and this eventually led me to choose pharmacy.

Why NUS Pharmacy?

Pharmacy offers the widest breath of health-related disciplines covering different aspects of clinical, regulatory, research and manufacturing domains. I also had many opportunities to explore my interests further through co-curricular activities (CCAs) in NUS’ Pharmaceutical Society.

What was the defining moment that sparked your interest in the health sciences?

When I was in National Service, I had the rare opportunity to become a Medical Sergeant and to serve as the Deputy Senior Medic of a medical centre, where I gained exposure to healthcare. I acquired broad-ranging knowledge, from health administration, to supervisory skills, and most importantly, knowledge of tools of the trade, such as dispensing, treatment and paramedical care. Ultimately, it was a personal encounter, where I experienced firsthand the special relationship and trust between a patient and a health professional, that convinced me.
