Global Young Academy Membership

March 14, 2024

Congratulations to Dr FUNG Fun Man, Department of Chemistry, the first and only Singaporean out of 45 early-and mid-career researchers to be awarded membership in the Global Young Academy (GYA).

Dr Fung’s research bridges the gap between digital learning and the science of learning, exploring how to empower learners through applied research in educational technology and experiential learning. His team pioneers the use of spatial reality to create immersive training environments for scientists in virtual laboratories.

In recognition of his research, Dr Fung was appointed as Associate Editor on Chemistry Teacher International, a peer-reviewed journal supported by the Division of Chemistry Education of the European Chemical Society and the Committee on Chemistry Education of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). He also serves on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Chemical Education, a peer-reviewed publication of the American Chemical Society.

Dr Fung says, “This honour is a tremendous privilege. I am thankful to receive the GYA membership and to join a very respected group of recipients. NUS gave me an enormous, once in a lifetime opportunity to build my academic career working alongside outstanding researchers. I am more determined to push the frontiers of research further, to answer increasingly complex questions.”

Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr Fung is passionate about civic engagement and is an active volunteer on youth empowerment in the community. He previously served as chair of the National Youth Council (NYC)-NUSS Young ChangeMakers Grant panel which supports youth-initiated projects that benefit Singapore society.

Dr Fung will commence his five-year term in May 2024, during the GYA’s Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists, which will be held in Washington, DC, United States this year.
