Overview

In the Science & Technology Global Industry Insights course, take a trip to a country in the region and explore the vast and exciting experiences that an emerging economy presents.

This course is conducted over intensive study week(s) in an emerging market economy. Here are the course highlights:

  • Company visits and seminars on emerging market fundamentals and the broad industry landscape in an ASEAN country, China or India. Seminars are conducted by esteemed industry representatives in the country
  • Case studies to develop a thorough understanding of several companies, where you will learn and apply the Business Model Canvas to analyse the business models of companies visited
  • Cultural exposure through immersion opportunities in the country’s culture through cultural workshops and/or visits, social networking with NUS alumni and/or local partner university students in the respective country
  • Group assignments to share your unique experience, takeaways and reflections after visiting the companies 

Learning Objectives

Through this experience, you will learn what emerging market economies are, the importance of an overseas internship experience and international workplace knowledge and skills.  

  • Recognise business and economic opportunities in emerging economies and the importance of overseas internships in offering access to a wider repertoire of opportunities and career pathways  
  • Gain cross-cultural understanding of the international workplace and the skills that are relevant in professional business settings  
  • Acquire understanding of the interconnectedness of Singapore’s industry landscape and that of the emerging economy
  • Learn firsthand about startups, established companies and multinational firms in an emerging economy  
  • Gain multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary knowledge and understand latest trends across various industries that are complementary to the different undergraduate majors in the Faculty of Science 
  • Learn and apply basic business concepts and skills that are associated with the different aspects of a business  
  • Acquire business acumen by learning how the business models of companies are key to their continued success in a competitive world  
  • Enhance your opportunities of an overseas work stint which may open up a wider repertoire of career pathways

    SP2400 Science & Technology Global Industry Insights (Vietnam)

    Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

    With its robust taxation policies, competitive labour costs and multilateral free trade agreements, Vietnam is emerging as a major manufacturing hub in Asia with a balanced mix of high-value industries like electronics and low-value industries like clothing. Leveraging its strategic location and cost-competitiveness, Vietnam aims to increase its share of manufacturing share by 2030 by attracting more foreign investments into higher value-added manufacturing.

    With a population of over 98.2 million (Source: World Bank 2022), Vietnam is the third largest market in Southeast Asia. It has one of the fastest growing economies in the region and is projected to be among the top 20 economies globally by 2050 (Source: PwC).

    Visit major corporations like Shopee, Abbott LaboratoriesNashTechHeineken, etc., to understand industries from business leaders on the ground.

    Course Units:2 Units

    Assessment and Grading Basis:100% CA, CS/CU 

    Pre-requisites:Undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science who have completed at least 40 Units, including CFG1002 Career Catalyst or HS1401S/A Career Compass I.

    20 September to 26 September 2026 (Academic Year 2026/2027 Semester 1 Recess Week)

    As this is an in-country experience, there will be a programme fee of S$1,600 to S$1,800 to participate in this course. The programme fees include:

    • Pre-arranged airflight
    • Accommodation  
    • Most meals
    • In-local transport to company visits and events

    All programme activities are compulsory.

    NUS will provide funding support of S$1,000 or S$500, as follows:  

    In addition, students on Financial Aid may register the usage of the Opportunity Enhancement Grant (OEG) for this course. Please approach the Office of Admissions for more details.  

    Beyond the programme fees, you should prepare and have available a minimum of S$300 to S$400 for your own personal expenditure (souvenirs, shopping, meals, etc.) during the trip.
