Building inclusivity, one conversation at a time
December 17, 2025
When EDIphy – Equity, Diversity, Inclusion in Physics – was launched in 2023, it was not only about unveiling a new initiative. Instead, it was intended to mark the start of a shift in mindsets within the physical sciences / physics that has long struggled with gender imbalance. These gaps are more than statistics; they are lived realities.
Founded by quantum physicist Asst Prof Yvonne Gao, EDIphy emerged from a simple but powerful premise: that innovation flourishes when diverse minds are welcomed, supported and empowered.
“One of the biggest myths about diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives is the idea that we are sacrificing quality,” she says. “But diversity in people and ideas drives innovation and creativity, which are key for any team or organisation to thrive.”

EDIphy was created as a ground-up, community-driven initiative run by students and faculty. The team set out to build a foundation of knowledge to cultivate connections and break down the barriers that hinder participation and belonging.
EDIphy’s vision is rooted in the long game. Changing mindsets and addressing stereotypes will not happen overnight – but that is precisely why the initiative was designed for sustained impact. From skills-building to dialogue sessions and the formation of support networks and action groups, EDIphy’s approach is deliberately multifaceted.
Asst Prof Gao says, “We recognise that promoting EDI requires changing mindsets and challenging stereotypes. This will take time and intentional efforts. Through EDIphy, we are tackling this on many different fronts in parallel. With continuous and steady efforts, we aim to gradually build up the momentum in our community and make it a more welcoming and inclusive environment.
