NUS Science Career and Internships Fair 2024
February 14, 2024The 2024 edition of the Science Career and Internships Fair which concluded on 2 February 2024 at the Medicine+Science Library (MSL) drew more than 600 NUS Science students. The boisterous affair was a testament to the growing demand of internships by our undergraduates, as well as a bid by senior students to kickstart their careers by engaging prospective employers from diverse sectors.
The fair attracted 24 employers – spanning the range of sciences, from the mathematical sciences to physical sciences and life sciences – many of them sterling brands within their respective sectors.
More employers are seeking data scientists, a valuable skill as more businesses pivot toward data-driven decision-making. These included quantitative trading firms (such as Citadel | Citadel Security, Cubist Systematic Strategies, Tower Research Capital and WorldQuant) and other industries including transport (Singapore International Airlines) and hospitality (Marina Bay Sands).
Another highlight was the presence of a high proportion of semiconductor industries, including Applied Materials, GlobalFoundries, Micron and Seagate Technology. The public sector, another source of internships and full-time employment opportunities for NUS Science students, was represented by DSO National Laboratories, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). Collectively, the employers’ offerings covered more than 400 internships and full-time job opportunities.
The fair rode the wave of a series of preparatory events curated by the Centre for Future-ready Graduates’ (CFG) Science career advisors. Resume and interview clinics were conducted prior to the fair, timed to run with the Resume Book Campaign. This campaign is a unique service provided to our students and employers to facilitate screening of potential student candidates by employers even before the event, providing employers the opportunity to conduct onsite interviews during the fair.
The end of the science fair was followed by “The Science Advantage Seminar” moderated by CFG. The hour-long panel session featured our chemistry, life sciences, mathematics and physics alumni who are working in various roles in different industries, illustrating the versatility of a science degree. This session was attended by nearly 70 students, who also had the opportunity to network with their seniors at the close of the panel discussions.
