NEA Industrial Site Visit

Mosquitoes may be tiny, but their impact on human health is immense; they are responsible for spreading diseases that affect millions worldwide. Understanding such challenges requires more than classroom learning alone – which is why industry visits help students connect science with real-world impact.

These lessons came to life for a group of NUS CHS students during their visit to the National Environment Agency (NEA)’s Environmental Health Institute. Drawn by a shared interest in public health and environmental science, they witnessed firsthand how Singapore combats mosquito-borne disease through Project Wolbachia.

The students explored mosquito biology, learned about surveillance techniques and discovered cutting-edge control strategies using Wolbachia technology to suppress the Aedes aegypti mosquito population and reduce dengue transmission.

Just as striking was the level of interdisciplinary collaboration at work, bringing together biology, data science, technology and environmental management to drive effective public health interventions.

From advancing research to shaping public health policies, this glimpse into applied science left a lasting impression. Life Sciences student Ahmad Musa Asy’Ari Bin Shahlan says, “The visit taught me a lot about the environmental health sector and it will inform my career decisions in the future.”
