Professor Paul Matsudaira obtained his PhD in Biological Sciences from Dartmouth College (1981). He started his academic career at the Whitehead Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where his laboratory studied biophysics of actin and other polymer protein bundles, mechanics of polymers and single cells motility, and developed microanalytical methods. He was a Professor in the Department of Biology and the Department of Biological Engineering.
Prof Matsudaira was the Director at the Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for BioImaging (2001 to 2008). He was also appointed the Director, MIT Computational and Systems Biology Initiative (CSBi) (2005 to 2007) as well as co-Director of the Singapore MIT Alliance Computation and Systems Biology Program (2005 to 2008).
In 2009, Prof Matsudaira moved to Singapore to take up an appointment at NUS, where he established the Centre for BioImaging Sciences (CBIS), headed the Department of Biological Sciences and co-founded the Mechanobiology Institute (MBI). Outside of academia, he co-founded ANDE, a DNA forensics company, and Paratus Sciences, a biotechnology company.
Prof Matsudaira has published over 185 papers and five books and he was on the editorial board of several prestigious journals, including Integrative Biology, Methods in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology of the Cell, and the Nature Encyclopedia of Life Sciences.
Prof Matsudaira is currently an Emeritus Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences.
Dr Zhao Jingyuan is a thought leader in data and Artificial Intelligence (AI), nurturing these capabilities and talents across the Asia Pacific region.
As Group Chief Data Officer of Great Eastern, her aim is to define the organisation’s Group Data and AI strategy and roadmap, build data and AI capabilities and solutions to drive business outcomes, and empower everyone in Great Eastern to make data-driven decisions.
Before joining Great Eastern, she held leadership positions in data and AI across different industries, including the Lazada Group where she managed regional data analytics, NTUC Enterprise where she led its Advanced Analytics Centre and Capgemini in the Asia Pacific (APAC) where she oversaw its regional data analytics and AI portfolio.
Dr Zhao has been a guest speaker in numerous talks and conferences here and overseas. She is ardent about nurturing young talents and teaches data science and Big Data-related courses as an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Science, NUS.
She was named in the Singapore 100 Women in Tech (2021) list in recognition of her contributions to the technology sector.
Dr Zhao holds a PhD in Statistics from NUS.
Ms Dewi Hartaty Suratty is a prominent leader in the halal industry. She is the CEO of Warees Halal and holds a concurrent appointment as the Director (Asset Policy & Endowment) at the Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS), a statutory board overseeing Muslim affairs, where she oversees the development and administration of community funds.
Ms Suratty has played a pivotal role in reshaping the Singapore halal industry, driving the evolution of its business and compliance models. She led her team in the formulation of progressive policies that contributed to Singapore’s strategic international positioning, facilitated food security and bolstered social cohesion. These initiatives have empowered businesses to expand their reach within the global halal industry.
She has been involved in numerous influential bodies, such as the ASEAN Working Group on Halal Food, MABIMS Special Technical Committee on Halal Development, the Singapore Food Standards Committee, and the Food Innovation & Resource Centre Advisory Panel.
She has received multiple accolades for her pioneering contributions. These include the MUIS Excellence Award for the Wakaf Dispute Resolution Framework as well as the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Commendation and Innovation FRONTIER (‘Facilitating Reforms for Innovation & Enterprise’) Awards for establishing the Singapore Halal Quality Management System.
Internationally recognised for leadership excellence, she was featured in the publication, Contribution of Women in the Global Islamic Economy, an initiative under the patronage of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries.
Ms Suratty holds a Master of Business Administration (Distinction) and an Honours Degree in Food Science and Technology, as well as professional certifications in wealth planning and training and assessment.
Associate Professor Chan Cheng Leng is the Group Director, Health Products Regulation Group at Health Sciences Authority (HSA), Singapore. She has extensive and deep work experience in health products regulation and safety monitoring.
As the chief health products regulator, she plays a leading role in developing and implementing national policies and directing the operations of the Group, to safeguard and advance public health through the timely availability of safe and efficacious quality health products. She is also instrumental in driving excellence and innovation in regulatory science.
Under her leadership, HSA became the first National Regulatory Authority in the world in January 2022 to be awarded the highest recognition for an advanced medicines regulatory system by the World Health Organization (WHO). This positions Singapore internationally as one of the most trusted and advanced regulators for medicines, contributing to public health outcomes in Singapore and beyond.
She also actively spearheads national efforts to improve safety monitoring of medicines. Under her stewardship, Singapore has consistently been ranked by WHO as among the top countries in the world for adverse drug reactions reporting.
To nurture the younger generation of healthcare professionals, she has been teaching pharmacovigilance and health products regulation to undergraduates at the universities in Singapore since 2008.
In recognition of her service to the nation, she has received several national awards including the prestigious Public Administration Medal and awards from the Minister for Health and in 2022, Public Sector Exemplary Leader Award and the National Day Awards (COVID-19).

In August 2022, we led an expedition to Timor-Leste in collaboration with Conservation International and the government of Timor-Leste. The Museum’s herpetologist, Dr CHAN Kin Onn, discovered a new species of bent-toed gecko which was named Cyrtodactylus santana, in reference to the Nino Konis Santana National Park, in which the gecko was discovered.
