Faculty of Science/Biological Sciences

ELECTRON MICROSCOPY UNIT

History

The department first introduced Electron Microscopy in 1984 when the Government of Japan presented a JEOL JEM 100 CXII STEM equipped with X-ray Microanalysis attachment and other sample preparation equipment. It was at that time the most up-to-date facility in Singapore and it served the whole of the Science Faculty and other institutes, such as SGH. It had analysed a wide range of biological and physical samples from unicellular organisms to tissues of both botanical and zoological nature and from nanoparticles to geological samples. It continues to be used by research personnel from many Faculties and Departments of NUS and industry.

Currently the Unit has:

TEMs:

  • JEOL JEM 3010 HRTEM & EDX (300KV LaB6) with Cooling/Heating sample Holder
For conventional HRTEM imaging, Electron  Diffraction Pattern, Elemental X-ray micro-analysis
  • JEOL JEM 2010F HRTEM (200KV Field Emission Gun) with Cryo-sample Holder
For conventional HRTEM imaging, Electron Diffraction Pattern
  • PHILIPS CM10 TEM (100KV W)
    For conventional transmitted electron imaging.

SEM:

  • JEOL JSM T220A SEM
    For conventiaonl SEM

Rules and Regulations

A form needs to be filled out by the applicant and signed by his/her supervisor or PI before bookings can be made for training/use of instuments, EMs and darkroom. Each user is allowed to book only one session (9 am-1 pm; 2 pm- 6 pm Friday 5.30pm) in advance. Any cancellation of session booked must be informed as early as possible so that others can use the slot. Usage of all equipment at any time must be recorded in their respective log/record books placed with the equipment.

List of Charges

All training in sample preparation and demonstration of equipment and EMs are provided free of charge but consumables used will be charged. Electron Microscope usage will also be charged per hour as per attached on a bi-annual basis:
