Admission Information

The following information may be helpful to you in your application procedures.

1) Course and other fees

Please refer to the Registrar's Office on up-to-date Graduate Programme Fees and Mandatory Miscellaneous Fees, as well as procedures on fee payment.

2) Research scholarship

(from Registrar's Office)

Research Scholarships are awarded by NUS to outstanding graduates for research leading to a higher degree at the University. The Scholarships are tenable for 1 year in the first instance and are renewable annually, subject to satisfactory progress. The maximum period of award is 2-2.5 years for Master's candidates and 3-4 years for Ph.D. candidates.

Each Scholarship carries a monthly stipend of minimum S$1,500 and a full research fee subsidy. No travel or other allowances are provided. No bond is required.

Research scholars may be eligible for an additional stipend of up to $500 per month upon registering as a PhD student and another additional stipend of up to $500 per month upon passing the PhD qualifying examination, which is normally held 12 to 18 months after registration of candidature. The top up is renewable annually subject to good performance and is applicable up to the third year of candidature.

Research scholars will be required to assist the Departments in teaching or other work as designated for up to 6 hours per week. They will not receive additional pay for these duties, as it is a condition of the research scholarship. Research scholars should NOT work more than 16 hours a week including all paid and unpaid work.

Work performed by graduate students in part-time teaching or other departmental work or as graduate student researchers are subject to tax (whilst Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents are subject to both CPF and tax). Graduate students performing such work are not required to apply for a work permit or employment pass.

3) Immigration matters:

Foreign students need a valid passport to enter Singapore. For nationals of countries who require an entry visa, the University will apply a single-journey visa cum inprinciple student pass approval on their behalf. The original approval letter issued by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the valid passport must be presented to the Duty Officer at the Immigration checkpoint upon arrival in Singapore.

In Singapore, a foreign student will be given a Social Visit Pass for 2 weeks. During this period, the student must apply for a Student Pass (after the completion of registration formalities at the Registrar's Office) at the ICA or through the NUS Office of Student Affairs.

With effect from 1 March 2000, the Singapore Immigration requires all applicants who have been granted in-principle approvals for Student Pass/Social Visit Pass for 6 months or more, to pass a medical examination before they can be issued with the actual pass. For those who did not pass the medical examination will have to return to their own country at their own expense.

For more information, please check with the Registrar's Office.

4 ) Estimated living costs in Singapore and accommodation:

The Registrar's Office has an estimate of the expected living costs in Singapore.

Accommodation can be arranged through the Office of Student Affairs.

5) International Student Guide:

The Office of Student Affairs has a guide for international students to help you with information about Singapore and NUS.
