Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) Option Policy

S/U Option Entitlement
Students from ALL cohorts are allowed to exercise the S/U option on a given number of MCs (or modules) depending on the year of matriculation:

Cohort S/U Option Entitlement
2001-2 Students may exercise the S/U option on up to 2 ULR modules (includes GEMs/SS/Breadth modules) provided they don't count towards student's major, minor or faculty requirements
2002-3 & after Students may exercise the S/U option on 12 MCs worth of modules, provided they don't count towards student's major, minor, faculty or University Scholars Programme (USP) requirements

Professional Placement Programme & S/U Option Entitlement
Applied Science students' 8 MC Professional Placement Programme module which is read on an S/U basis will not impinge on the 2 modules worth of S/U option (accorded to cohorts 2001-2 & before) and 12 MCs worth of S/U option (accorded to cohorts 2002-3 & after).

About S/U Grading
  • For modules read on an S/U basis, a credit is obtained only if a student attains a 'Satisfactory' grade on the module.
  • A 'Satisfactory' grade is an equivalent of a C grade [or grade point of 2.0] and above.
  • All modules read on S/U basis are excluded from the computation of the CAP.
  • S/U options, once declared are irrevocable. Students may not later request for a conversion to a letter grade (i.e. A - D) after they have declared.

S/U Option Declaration - Some Limitations
  • Science students are not allowed to declare the S/U option on all regular Science modules although they intend to read these as unrestricted electives.
  • Science students may however declare the S/U option on GEM/Ks hosted by FOS.
  • If a General Education Module (GEM) is cross-listed with a regular Science module (e.g. GEK1507/PR1301), students may only declare the S/U option on the GEM and not on PR1301.
