English Skills - Modules Offered by CELC

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY MODULES
Based on the Qualifying English Test results, students (matriculated in 2001-2 and onwards) who fail to meet the exemption criteria have to take and pass ES1301. In addition, weaker students have to take and pass both ES1000 and ES1301.
Students who are required to take both ES1000 and ES1301 must take ES1000 in the first semester whilst students who are required to take only ES1301 may do so in either the first or the second semester.
Students who need to fulfill the ES requirement for graduation must do so by the end of their fourth semester at the latest.

Module Registration
Students need not bid for ES1000 & ES1301 via CORS. These modules will be pre-allocated to students. Tutorials however, will not be pre-allocated. Students are to register for their tutorial via CORS.

Workload & CAP
ES1000 & ES1301 will count towards students' workload but will NOT count towards students' CAP (although it carries a letter grade). They will not be counted towards the limit of MCs set on the Level 1000 modules.

S/U Option
Students are NOT allowed to declare the S/U option on ES1000 & ES1301.

OTHER ENGLISH SKILLS MODULES
This module is designed for first year undergraduate students with the aim of helping them develop thinking, reading and writing skills relevant for undergraduate scientific texts write better academic science texts, and enabling them to develop critical and analytical skills. The curriculum is organized along three main interrelated areas: (i) Social development of scientific writing, (ii) General description of formal objective style of writing, and (iii) Argumentation in the experimental report. Classes are conducted in both lecture and tutorial modes. Tutorials are in workshop or seminar style with emphasis on students? interaction with and critical reflection of reading texts.
This module can be used to count towards:
(i) CFM requirements for cohort 2000-1 & before.
(ii) UE (outside student's faculty) for cohorts 2001-2.
(iii) Breadth Requirements for cohorts 2002-3 & after.
