UROPS - How to begin?
Ask yourself the questions below before you begin:
  • Can you commit yourself to 6-10 hours of UROPS research per week?
  • Can you afford the time away from your regular workload?
  • Can you work on a project for one or more than one semesters?
If your answers to the above are yes, you would need to decide on which areas of research you want to pursue and which skills you wish to develop.

The projects available are entered by the supervisors and you could view them at the UROPS projects listing.

Registration of UROPS project will follow the timeline shown below. Some deadlines would be subjected to revisions, so please check for updates.

AY2009/2010 Timeline

Semester 1

Events Dates
Application opens for students to meet supervisor to plan project 15 Jun 2009 - 26 Jun 2009
Online Registration (only for UROPS) 29 Jun 2009 - 10 Jul 2009
If application is successful, contact supervisor and start UROPS

If application is unsuccessful, logon and apply for another project

If you have started on UROPS last regular semester, continue with project
20 Jul 2009
Deadline to drop without penalty (4 or 8 MCs) Refer to CORS website
Deadline to drop with "W" grade (4 or 8 MCs) Refer to CORS website
Deadline to drop with "F" grade (4 or 8 MCs) Refer to CORS website
Deadline for submission of Congress paper to Department coordinator 23 Oct 2009
Submission of full report to Department Coordinator Before reading week (exact date to be decided by the Department)
Deadline for extension of 4MCs to 8MCs project (subject to approval)

If approved, continue with project, and submit the Congress paper and report according to the timeline of next semester
At least 3 weeks before the deadline for submission of Congress paper.

Semester 2

Online Registration (only for UROPS) 14 Dec 2009 - 18 Dec 2009
If application is successful, contact supervisor and start UROPS

If application is unsuccessful, logon and apply for another project

If you have started on UROPS last regular semester, continue with project
28 Dec 2009
Deadline to drop without penalty (4 or 8 MCs) Refer to CORS website

AY2009/2010 Special Term

Events Deadlines
Application opens for students from Partner Universities to liaise with supervisors and obtain email confirmation from supervisors. 6 Jan 2010 - 1 Mar 2010
Students from Partner Universities register online via Non-Graduating application system.

For Section D, tick "Coursework" and press "Next" to proceed to the next page.

On the next page, select "2008/2009 Semester 3", "Science" then "LSM3288" from the drop-down list under Table 1.

The hard copy of the acceptance email from the supervisor together with the supporting documents will have to reach the address on the left panel of this website within one week after the online application.

1 Mar 2010
Application opens for NUS Science students to liaise with supervisors and obtain email confirmation from supervisors. 1 Mar 2010 - 12 Mar 2010
Online Registration at student intranet (only for NUS Science students) 15 Mar 2010 - 19 Mar 2010
If application is successful, contact supervisor and start UROPS

If application is unsuccessful, liaise and apply for another project
All projects MUST start on 10 May 2010
Deadline to drop with "W" grade (4 MCs) Refer to Special Term information in Registrar's Office website for AY0910 Special Term part 1
Deadline to drop with "F" grade (4 MCs) Refer to Special Term information in Registrar's Office website for AY0910 Special Term part 2
Deadline for submission of Congress paper to Department coordinator 23 Jul 2010
Submission of full report to Department Coordinator By the last week of Special Term part 2 (exact date to be decided by the Department)
Notes on UROPS Online Registration:
  • Applicants must have seen supervisor-in-charge on intended project before registration
  • Applicant selects project title and log-on to apply
  • Supervisor to indicate the allocation of project to applicant
  • Applicant will receive an email informing the results of the allocation of project
  • For students taking UROPS in Special Term:
    The project must be of 4 MC workload and to be completed during the special terms (i.e. 10 May to 31 Jul 2010). In other words, students must start their project in special term part 1 and complete it in special term part 2.
  • No change of project level is allowed after the online registration
