Multidisciplinary opportunities
Students with the aptitude and appetite for academic achievements that cut across different disciplines can opt for one of the following programmes offered in the Faculty of Science:

Double Degree Programme

The Double Degree Programme (DDP) allows students to graduate with two degrees in two different disciplines from two different Faculties within NUS. These double degrees have been designed for highly motivated individuals with passion and ability to pursue parallel interests in two complementary disciplines.

Double degree programme allows some modules taken to be double-counted towards the requirements of both degrees, thus enabling the student to complete the two degrees in a shorter period than it would take to complete both degrees separately.

There are 2 types of double degree programmes:

1. Specially Designed

The Specially Designed DDPs co-offered by the Faculty of Science are namely:

1. Law and Life Sciences
2. Computer Science and Mathematics/Applied Mathematics
3. Physics and Materials Science & Engineering

How to register?
Students can register at the point of matriculation or after their first semester. For more information, please refer to the department websites. After being accepted to the DDP, students are to inform Dean's Office.

2. Free Structure
These are double degree combinations put together by students themselves. Some examples include self-constructed DDPs in disciplines offered by the Faculty of Science and School of Business as well as Faculty of Science and Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences.

Except for certain prohibited combinations, as identified by the Faculties, all other combinations of double degree programmes will be allowed. The list of prohibited Double Degree combinations in FOS is as follows:

- Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours/ Non-Honours) in Applied Chemistry and Bachelor of Science (Honours/ Non-Honours) in Chemistry

- Bachelor of Science (Honours/ Non-Honours) in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics and Bachelor of Arts with a Shared Major in Mathematics

- Bachelor of Science (Honours/ Non-Honours) in Statistics and Bachelor of Arts with a Shared Major in Statistics

- Bachelor of Science (Pharmacy) (Honours/ Non-Honours) with any other degrees.

How to register?
Student must obtain the written approval of the both Faculties in order to be in DDP.

A science student who is interested in Free-structured DDP has to declare his/her intention to enroll for the programme just after completion of between 60 to 80 MCs (excluding MCs earned from student exchange programmes or advanced placement credits) with a minimum CAP requirement of 4.0 by writing to AskScience with his/her study plan. Student usually has read some modules in the respective areas intended for the double degree at point of application. Thus it would be most helpful for students to seek proper advice in planning their modules as early as possible in their candidature.

Some points to note in the course of self-planning for a DDP:

(i) University Level Requirements
- Students only need to satisfy one set of Singapore Studies (SS) Module and General Education Module (GEM) requirements.

- Students will not be required to take breadth modules if the degrees are from two different Faculties, as modules taken from one Faculty will satisfy the breadth requirements of the other Faculty. Students must take breadth modules if the degrees are within the same Faculty.

- Students taking double degree combinations involving degrees from Faculties in Group A and Group B must take one GEM each from the Subject Group A and Subject Group B.

Students taking double degree combinations from Faculties in Group A or within the same Faculty in Group A must take at least one GEM from Subject Group B.

Group A - Science and Technology
Faculty of Engineering
Faculty of Science
School of Computing

Group B - Humanities and Social Sciences
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
School of Business Administration

- If a student reads GEMs which are cross-listed with the second degree programme and uses them to fulfill the major requirement for the second degree, then the student will have to read other additional GEMs to fulfill the GE requirement.

(ii) Faculty Requirements
- Student reading double degree with the same faculty will only need to fulfill one set of faculty requirements.

- Student reading double degree with two Faculties will need to fulfill both set of faculty requirements.

(iii) Major Requirements
- At least two-thirds of each major must be fulfilled by distinct (i.e. not overlapping) modules.

- A minimum of 60% of major credits of each of the degrees must be letter graded and factored in the CAP of each degree.

- Modules used to fulfil the major requirements of both degrees may not be used to fulfill the requirements of a minor as well.

(iv) Unrestricted Electives
- Students will not be required to take Unrestricted Elective (UE) Modules. However, if UE modules are taken, these can be used to count to towards the requirements of either degree programme and not both.

(v) USP Requirements
- USP students must satisfy the same 48 MCs of USP requirements as needed for a single-degree programme, that is, eight First-Tier modules (including the compulsory Writing and Critical Thinking modules) and four Advanced Modules. The Advanced Modules, can be drawn from either the first or the second degree programme, or a combination of both.

(vi) S/U option
- Up to a maximum of 12 MCs as S/U [taking into account of the maximum number of MCs that may be excluded from computation of CAP (refer to RO website here)]
- Please check with the respective faculties on the S/U-option policy. [For students doing Science degree, please refer here.]

(vii) CAP
- The student will be issued two separate degrees, with each degree classified according to the CAP for the respective modules. Both CAPs and degrees will be noted on the student's transcript.

(viii) Graduation Requirements
- The minimum MC required for a DDP with single honours and double honours are 180 and 200 respectively. However, the actual total MCs will be dependent on the requirements of each of the two degrees and how much double counting is permitted as specified by the respective Faculties.

- Maximum candidature for DDP is 6 years.

- Two separate degrees will be conferred with the same conferment date and the two degree scrolls issued, one for each degree.

(ix) Exit
- A student who does not maintain a CAP of 4.0 in modules contributing to the original degree for any two consecutive semesters will be required to withdraw from the DDP by withdrawing from the second degree programme.

- He/she is not allowed to withdraw from the first degree (i.e. originally offered degree) programme and continue with the second degree programme. Upon withdrawal, all the modules which the student has taken to fulfill the requirements of the second degree will be reflected in the transcript and included in the computation of the CAP for the single degree.

More information may be found here at the RO's website.

Double Major Programme

FOS Students must read at least 1 major but are allowed to read up to 2 majors (1 primary and 1 second major) via declaration on CORS. The 2 majors (1 primary and 1 second major) would be completed under a single degree i.e B.Sc. (Hons.) or B.Sc. As such, only the set of university level and faculty requirements for the student's primary major had to be fulfilled in addition to both the major requirements. Up to 8MCs of the modules in the second major can be used to double count towards either the Faculty, Primary Major or Minor requirements.

1. Second Majors Offered by FOS

Please click here for more information.

2. Second Majors Offered Outside FOS

FOS students may also apply to read a second major offered by other faculties via direct application. Invitation to apply for such second majors will be extended to FOS students via emails when the call for applications opens from time to time.

Information on second majors offered by the faculties outside FOS may be found below:
1. Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences
2. NUS Business School

3. Faculty of Engineering

Non FOS students who are interested in reading a second major offered by FOS should write in to the department offering it. The selection for non FOS students to read FOS second majors would be conducted on a competitive basis.
