Study Abroad Programmes
To cultivate a generation of undergraduates who are enterprising and global in outlook, FOS offers a host of study-abroad programmes through which they can broaden their academic, intellectual and cultural horizons:

Under the Student Exchange Programme (SEP), undergraduates can study at a reputable university for up to 2 semesters.

Through the Summer Programme (SP), Science students can spend 6 to 15 weeks at one of the Faculty overseas partner universities, taking courses to complement those in NUS. Current SP partners are the University of New South Wales, University of Toronto, University of California, Los Angeles and University of Waterloo. The Global Clinic Programme, another type of Summer Programme, teams NUS students up with counterparts from Harvey Mudd College in a research-based project. In the offering are summer programme opportunities at the University of British Columbia and the University of North Carolina.

More ambitious plans are afoot, including a joint minor programme between the Faculty and the University of Toronto targeted to be launched in AY2008/2009.

Selected Science students with an entrepreneurial turn can participate in the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) programme which aims to develop their potential by giving them appropriate training in an academic environment and immersing them for a year in start-up companies in Silicon Valley, Bio-Valley (Pennsylvania), Stockholm or Shanghai.

For 10 weeks, participants in the highly sought after California Institute of Technology -Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships Programme (Caltech-SURF), mentored by research luminaries, engage in intensive research, discussions, experiments and scientific writing in a globally competitive environment. Caltech-SURF opens doors to professions that require collaboration with scientific communities and individuals around the world.

The prestigious French Double Degree Programme (FDDP) with the French Grandes Ecoles enables students who excel in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences to study in one of top six premier institutions in France, experience its rich culture, and master one of the world's most loved languages.

In partnership with the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS), Waseda University, one of the two foremost private universities in Japan, FOS and FASS (Faculty of Arts and Social Science, NUS) also offer USP students a 5-year NUS-Waseda Double Degree Programme. Participants of the programme take courses that span seven thematic areas in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. Lessons are conducted in English but students undergo intensive Japanese language courses.
Funding for Students

Students who qualify for and wish to participate in overseas programmes but are financially constrained may apply to the Science Dean's Office for assistance. The Science Student Overseas Exposure Fund (SSOEF), set up from donations from FOS alumni, provides interest-free loans or/and grants to students from low income families to help them defray part of the cost of their airfare, accommodation, and daily expenses.
