Leave of Absence

Students may request for short term or semester long periods of Leave of Absence (LOA) from the university.

Short Term LOA
  • Students may request for short term LOA for academic reasons (e.g. attending conferences), personal reasons (e.g. participation in sports activities and competitions), and medical reasons.
  • If you will be missing classes for only a few days due to medical reasons and that LOA application is not necessary, you should submit your medical certification to the departments hosting the modules so that they may take note.
  • There will be no make-up classes held for lectures/tutorials/practicals. It will be the student's responsibility to catch up on missed lessons and consult lecturers/tutors as appropriate, upon return from leave
  • Students should make separate arrangements with respective lecturers should they miss any continuous assessments (CA) during this period of leave

Semester Long LOA
  • Science students may only be granted Semester long LOA for medical reasons.
  • Students may be liable to pay fees for the semester if LOA is applied beyond the second week of term. Science students who appeal for waiver of school fees will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • All modules registered for that semester will be removed from your records.
  • Semester long LOA is not counted into the maximum candidature of the programme pursued by the student concerned.
  • To resume studies from LOA, you are required to submit to Dean's Office, a medical certificate/report from UHWC to certify that you are medically fit to continue your studies.
  • Students who do not inform their intentions to resume studies may be terminated from the university.

Application Procedure
Science students should apply through the Dean's Office by writing an official request to scilpr@nus.edu.sg or sciyy@nus.edu.sg with all relevant supporting documents. Medical certificates should preferably be obtained from the University Health and Wellness Centre (UHWC). If required, students will be contacted via NUS email to meet with the Assistant Dean/Vice Dean. Once approved, an official LOA email and/or letter will be issued to the student.
Please also note that students who are on LOA are required to vacate their hostel accommodation during the period of leave. The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) will re-assess the hostel applications of students returning from LOA. For students granted LOA on medical grounds, OSA requires a Consent Form for the release of personal records to OSA and a Certificate of Fitness to be submitted with the hostel application.
