Team SAVEZ, comprising NUS Physics students (SEAH Zong Long, KOH Jun Hao and CHAN Si Min) and NUS Engineering students (UDAYAGIRI Vishnu Saran and Ernst CHEOK Ji Yang), is amongst the top five finalists in the inaugural Singapore Frontier Challenge 2017.

The Singapore Frontier Challenge, held from June to September, encourages undergraduate students from NUS, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to propose solutions to address the theme “Alternative Energy: Production, Transmission, Storage”. The competition hopes to challenge the youths to become more involved in addressing real-world challenges.

Under the mentorship of Dr TAN Swee Ching from NUS’ Materials Science and Engineering Department, Team SAVEZ created two prototypes - a solar cell fabric and a three-dimensional (3D) transparent solar cell - by drawing inspiration from photosynthesis where plants convert sunlight into useful energy in an organic and sustainable way.

The team’s proposal is timely, since solar energy as an alternative source of power is taking off in Singapore, with the Government pushing to increase adoption.

Team member KOH Jun Hao said, “We decided to focus on solar energy as it is a renewable energy source at no cost and unlike conventional power, solar produces no harmful emissions that damage the environment.”

The event sponsor, SP Group, a leading energy utility company, will be providing expertise knowledge and mentoring the teams in coming up with ideas and prototypes to alleviate Singapore’s reliance on traditional energy sources.

Participants will also be equipped with skills through energy-related talks and workshops, such as 3D printing, using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to design mechanical parts, as well as understanding Arduino, an open-source electronics platform which creates prototypes.
