Mathematics Enrichment Camp 2017

Organised annually since 2005, the Enrichment Camp provides a platform for pre-university students to learn about mathematics and its applications, beyond the realm of textbooks. Through this camp, the department also hopes to inspire students to study mathematics at NUS. More than 100 students attended this year’s camp.

The half-day event was held on 19 August and comprised short talks on various topics.  The day kicked off with a welcome message and an introduction on the department’s undergraduate programmes by Prof Victor TAN, Assistant Head of the Mathematics Department.

This was followed by three talks covering diverse topics, ranging from topology to data science.

Prof TAN Ser Peow provided a peek into the topology and geometry of closed surfaces.  Dr WANG Fei delved into how numbers are the most fundamental concepts of mathematics, and shared how it took centuries for the notion of numbers to be extended.  Dr Vincent TAN ended the camp, sharing simple models of big datasets from a statistical perspective.

Short videos on related areas were screened between the talks and there were interactive quizzes to engage the participants. Nine lucky participants walked away with attractive prizes.

Prof Victor Tan said, “The enrichment camp is an excellent platform to reach out to pre-university students, especially those who are interested to pursue mathematics-related subjects when they enter university. We will continue to improve the camp activities to make the programme even more engaging and interesting.”
