21st Biological Sciences Graduate Congress

The Biological Sciences Graduate Congress is an annual congress which is organised by graduate students from three collaborating universities: National University of Singapore (NUS), University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia, and Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand.

The event provides a platform for graduate students and delegates from UM and CU to exchange ideas and present their latest research findings. The congress also seeks to establish future collaborations amongst young scientists.

Held from 15 to 17 December 2016, the congress covered four themes that ran in parallel sessions, namely: Applied Science and Biotechnology; Biochemistry and Physiology; Biodiversity, Ecology and Systematics; and Cell & Molecular Biology.

A total of 29 postgraduate students from the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS), together with participants from the partner universities and other universities from six countries, participated in the oral and poster presentations. 11 DBS students were awarded the top three prizes for their outstanding presentations. DBS’ Dr WU Mi also gave an inspiring keynote lecture on the evolution of cancer cells.

Gowri RAJARATNAM, the event Committee Chair, said,“The Congress was a great opportunity to meet students from different universities and research fields. The event was packed with talks and posters, allowing me to learn more about the diversity of ongoing research projects in the region.”

Committee member Lionel NG said, "There were many informative talks and poster presentations. This enabled participants to keep up to date with what their peers are working on."
