Bringing Love to Every Single Soul (BLESS): LIM Huan Hock

LIM Huan Hock, a Year 2 Quantitative Finance student, has been volunteering with Bringing Love to Every Single Soul (BLESS) since his first year in NUS. BLESS is a non-profit organisation that aims to tap on the strengths of the community to care for the underprivileged. BLESS collaborates with various partners, including NUS, to develop outreach, educational and social development programmes.

Huan Hock joined Bringing Learning to Every Shining Star, a bi-weekly reading programme under BLESS, as he was looking for an opportunity to volunteer and give back to society. The reading sessions are held bi-weekly at the void decks of rental blocks, to bring learning opportunities to children from low-income families. Shining Star also plans to reach out to more children residing in rental blocks, through learning sheets and activity books.

Huan Hock found his sessions with the children enjoyable and meaningful. He said, “Besides reading to them, I also get to connect and interact with the children. This special bond that I developed with the children encouraged me to continue with the volunteer programme.”

Through BLESS, Huan Hock also gained greater awareness of the plight and challenges faced by the less privileged and marginalised communities in Singapore. He said, “I would not have gained this valuable learning experience without participating in BLESS. It is worth the effort to know that simple gestures can make the lives of young children more meaningful and bring on bright smiles.”

He added, “This experience has been an inspirational learning journey for me. I am reminded of how fortunate I am and I am motivated to work harder so that I can contribute more to society in future.”
