The four sub-committees of the NUS Students' Science Club, namely Receiving and Giving (RAG), Flag, Science Volunteer Corps (SVC) and Project Angel (PA), organised L.E.G.O. Week on 10 and 11 March at the Students’ Hub. L.E.G.O. stands for Loving. Enriching. Giving. Outreach.
Through this event, the students aim to promote volunteerism in the Faculty of Science. The event included promoting community and service learning and raising awareness of the 3Rs (Reuse, Reduce and Recycle) through donations of recyclable materials such as aluminium tin cans, plastic bottles, Ferrero Rocher chocolate wrappers and more.
The event introduced new regular volunteering initiatives for Science students that involve animal care, befriending of elders and mentorship of youths. This was also an avenue for students to gain more exposure in ad hoc programmes such as Old Items’ Collection where they can cultivate bonds while raising funds for beneficiaries.
There was also a collection drive by PA where customers can purchase stationeries for the rural children in Cambodia. All proceeds collected will go to the children in Cambodia. Donors were also encouraged to either contribute food items or monetary donations. The SVC utilised these funds to buy items like rice, cooking oil, canned food, condensed milk, biscuits, baked beans, instant noodles and sugar, for the less fortunate registered under Food from the Heart, a non-profit organisation in Singapore that brings joy to those in need by delivering food, toys and hope.
Year 3 Life Sciences Major FU Manjia said, “It is good that there are different volunteering initiatives, giving Science students more opportunities to play a part in volunteerism.”
Year 2 Life Sciences Major and SVC programmes executive TAN Yuan Lin said, "L.E.G.O. Week is a really good initiative by Science Club as it provides the service learning committees an additional platform to raise event awareness and provides opportunities for Science students to give back to the community.”
