Global Leadership Programme: Seoul National University visit
A delegation of 13 students and two staff from Seoul National University (SNU) had the opportunity to experience the Faculty’s Special Programme in Science (SPS) on 29 January. Founded in 1996, SPS nurtures a selected group of undergraduates with passion and aptitude for science. Participants are introduced to some of the broad areas of contemporary scientific research through an interdisciplinary approach, a hallmark of the programme.
The delegates were part of the Global Leadership Programme (GLEAP), a special programme under the purview of SNU College of Natural Sciences. Similar to SPS’ motto of "Connect Science, Illuminate the World", GLEAP seeks to converge disciplines by sharing knowledge and research amongst the diverse studies within natural sciences. The programme is intended for second and third year students with high academic achievements, a passion for science, a spirit for community service and aspirations to become leaders. GLEAP organises regular study tours for academic discussion and cultural exchange with students from similar programmes in overseas universities. This is GLEAP's second visit to NUS, and the first visit to SPS. This year’s study tour was led by GLEAP President, Mr Seonsik YUN.
The visit started with introductory presentations about the Faculty of Science and SPS by Mr Andreas DEWANTO, SPS Assistant Director, and on SNU College of Natural Sciences and GLEAP by Mr Sehyun JI and Mr Sungeun KIM. The visit culminated with an enthusiastic discussion among the GLEAP and SPS students. After the discussion, the delegation toured SPS’ facility and visited the Science Demonstration Laboratory, where Mr Dewanto demonstrated the principle behind composite material using ice and tissue paper.
