Raffles Institution visits Faculty of Science

The Department of Chemistry welcomed a group of 10 Secondary 4 students and three teachers from Raffles Institution (RI) on 14 August.

This visit was part of the activities planned for the students’ Analytical Chemistry elective module. The students first attended a curriculum talk by Prof ANG Wee Han, followed by a tour to the Chemical, Molecular and Materials Analysis Centre (CMMAC) and several teaching laboratories in the Department. The CMMAC consists of eight laboratories which feature a wide range of instrumentation providing solutions in chemical, molecular and materials analyses. The students visited six laboratories at CMMAC where the technicians shared the capabilities and techniques of the laboratory instruments.

The visit ended with a research talk by Prof CHNG Shu Sin, which featured highlights from Dr Chng’s PhD research and study experience.

The visit gave the students a better understanding about our Chemistry programme and the type of research conducted in the Department. One of the teachers, Ms KUA said, “Our students gained much from the talk and sharing session as well as the visit to the CMMAC and Chemistry Teaching Laboratories. They acquired a more in-depth and advanced knowledge on Analytical Chemistry at the tertiary level.”
