Faculty of Science Open House 2015

The Faculty of Science Open House on 23 May was attended by some 1,500 prospective students and their families. Held annually, the Faculty Open House allows visitors to experience first-hand, daily life as an NUS Science undergraduate and the vibrant campus environment. Prospective students also get to learn more about the wide array of courses, programmes and learning opportunities available, such as Study Abroad Programmes and internships.

The day began with a welcome address by the Dean of Science Prof SHEN Zuowei at LT27, which was also telecast at LT28 and LT29. The audience listened intently as the Dean shared about the relevance of Science in today’s society and how students can benefit from our Transformative Science Education.

This was followed by an interactive session with four current Science undergraduates from different disciplines and diverse backgrounds, who shared why they chose NUS Science, their experiences here and their future plans.

The exciting line-up of talks included the Master Class series delivered by our award-winning professors, which gave a sample of some of our exciting courses and provided insights into how lectures are conducted at the Faculty. The Master Classes covered topics such as forensic science, the link between prime numbers and cryptography and more. There were also sharing sessions by Science alumni and dialogue sessions with current undergraduates.

Aside from the academic talks, the prospective students had the opportunity to interact with professors, staff and Science undergraduates through sharing and games at the various department and student society booths. Visitors were also intrigued by the forensic science counter which was set up to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Forensic Science in NUS. A mini crime scene was enacted and many visitors participated in fingerprint dusting and lifting activities.

The guided faculty and laboratory tours to various locations such as the Science Demo Lab, the Centre for Quantum Technologies, the Food Science & Technology Lab, and more, provided visitors a peek of our state-of-the-art research facilities.

A special highlight for this year’s Open House was the Science & Technology exhibition outside LT 25. This exhibition is part of NUS’ 110th anniversary celebration. There were exhibits in quantum technologies, plant genetics, food science, data science and biosensors.

Campus life is definitely not just all study and no play. The Science Club students surprised the visitors with short flash mob dances. The complimentary ice-cream and popcorn stations were also a definite crowd-magnet.
