3 000 7 attended Solar eclipse observing session Amidst a party atmosphere, more than 3,000 people gathered to witness a rare celestial event, a partial solar eclipse with an obscuration of almost 90% which was visible in Singapore on 9 March 2016. The Physics Department organised various activities Bringing the future closer which included public lectures, an astrophotography exhibition, an overnight observing session and a live telecast of the total eclipse from Sulawesi. Two Physics students Laurentcia ARLANY and Edmund YUEN participated in the Sulawesi expedition, led by well-known local amateur astronomers and supported by the Physics Department. NUS Day of Service The Faculty organised activities as part of the inaugural NUS Day of Service on 3 September 2016, which reinforced the university’s tradition of giving back to society. 15 undergraduates from our Young Educators in Science programme conducted a show-and-tell of 20 science demonstrations developed at the Science Demonstration Laboratory for Science Centre Singapore visitors. The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum hosted guided gallery tours for 150 beneficiaries from the Autism Resource Centre (Singapore), Thong Kheng Seniors Activities Centre, Chen Su Lan Methodist Children's Home and DaySpring Residential Treatment Centre.
