Fundamentals of Nuclear Physics,  Radiation and Its Interaction with Matter

This session will introduce the structure of matter: atoms, electrons and protons and neutrons. This includes ionising radiation and its interaction with matter; interaction statistics; heavy charged particles (stopping power and projected range in materials); electrons and delta rays (collisional and radiative losses, extrapolated range in matter); X-ray and γ-ray photons (photoelectric absorption, Compton scattering, pair production, ß+ / ß- annihilation, attenuation effects in matter); and neutrons (elastic and inelastic scattering, nuclear reactions, neutron capture, neutron shielding).
