Peck Thian Guan
Director, Office of Safety, Health and Environment, National University of Singapore
BSc(Hons) 1987, MSc 1993, PhD 1994

Upon graduation, I worked as an industrial chemist with the then Singapore Institute of Standards and Industrial Research (SISIR). My job was to provide consultancy in product development, adn product and process imporvement to companies in the chemical sector.
My career with SISIR and later the Productivity and Standards Board and PSB Corporation was not entirely laboratory-based and technical in nature. I headed a consultancy business in quality management and later, environmental and occupational health and safety management. A secondment to the Ministry of Trade and Industry led to my involvement in formulating land-use and productivity policies.
My training in Science has helped me to be analytical and systematic. It has prepared me well for the various challenges I face at work and teh diverse job functions that are entrusted to me. In my current job as Director of the Office of Safety, Health and Environment at NUS, my background in Chemistry is called to bear in understanding and alleviating the hazards and risks in our laboratories.
