Christopher Syn
Forensic Scientist, Health Science Authority
BSc 1996, PhD 2001
The rigorous programmes I took in NUS Science had both breadth and depth. The holistic and comprehensive training allowed me to discover my passion for molecular biology. Today, as a Forensic Scientist, I put to practice all my scientific training. In our line of work, we examine exhibits submitted by the police. We look for biological materials like blood, semen, saliva, skin cells, etc, and extract DNA profiles from them. After analysing the samples, we present our findings to the Court as expert witness.
A degree in Science also develops the mind in other ways. I learnt to be analytical, critical and methodical - the very thinking skils at put me in good stead as a forensic scientist. These skills are also relevent for many careers in today's rapidly advancing knowledge-based and technology-driven economy.
