1 CONTEST RULES
a. Entrants must be:
i. students who are currently enrolled with the NUS Faculty of Science
ii. staff who are currently employed by the NUS Faculty of Science
b. In submitting photographs of individuals, it is assumed by the Organisers that the photographer has obtained the rights and permission of identifiable persons in the photograph. The Organisers are not responsible for cases in which permission has not been granted by the subjects.
c. Entries must be original works that have not been published nor publicly displayed. Works that have won prizes in any other competitions in any nature are not eligible for entry.
d. All photographs must be submitted via website. Although all possible care will be taken in handling all entries to the extent practicable, the Organisers cannot be responsible for any loss or damage to the entries.
e. In submitting entries by email, entrants agree to grant the Organisers permission to publish, reproduce, display, exhibit, show, print or distribute in any media both related and unrelated to the contest, without any monetary compensation to the photographer. Any photographs used for any purposes will be fully credited to the entrant.
f. The Organisers reserve the right to disqualify entries that do not conform to the stated rules and guidelines.
2 SUBMISSION
a. Each submission must be made separately via www.science.nus.edu.sg/80/photocomp.
b. Deadline for all submissions is 12:00 noon on 31 August 2009. Winners will be notified in September.
c. All submissions must be completed with the official entry form
d. Each submission consists of:
i. the photograph entry should be:
__- in JPEG format with a 300dpi resolution. Image size should be no smaller than 1Mb and no larger than 5 Mb.
__- format for filename is “Matric no_1_Filename.jpg”, where “1” is the entry number
__ (e.g. U123456X_1_brother.jpg, U123456X_2_sister.jpg)
ii. an appropriate title
iii. a 50- to 100-word write up/description of the photograph in relation to the selected category – i.e. “the story” behind the photograph.
e. For “Life in Science”, minimal digital manipulation (i.e. only colour enhancement and cropping) is allow. Adding or removing key elements of the composition may lead to disqualification.
f. For “Art in Science”, please include on the same page information pertaining to the specimen such as magnification, preparation protocol, stains, dyes, flourophores, contrast mechanisms and any other specialised techniques. Pseudo-coloured and other computer-enhanced images are acceptable, as long as image manipulation is done to bring out specific information in the image.
g. The entrant is solely responsible for the photographs submitted.
h. Each entrant may submit a total of no more than five submissions.
3 PRIZES
a. Prizes worth a total of more than $2,000 will be awarded to the top winners from each category.
b. Selected entries will be featured as posters, in print and/or online by the NUS Faculty of Science.
c. Best entries may be printed on the NUS Faculty of Science 2010 calendar.
4. DISQUALIFICATION
a. In the event that the awarded photographs have been proven to be plagiarized or having involved in any infringement of copyrights or other laws, the Organisers shall have the rights to disqualify the awarded winners and revoke any prizes and certificates awarded at their sole discretion.
b. In the event that the awarded photographs are proven to be unoriginal or have been fraudulently copied from other’s works, the Organisers shall have the rights to disqualify the awarded winners and revoke any prizes and certificates awarded at their sole discretion.
c. In the event that the commercialization and marketing activities of the awarded works contravenes the spirit of the contest, the Organisers shall have the rights to disqualify the awarded winners and revoke any prizes and certificates awarded at their sole discretion.
d. Pornographic, defamatory or otherwise unlawful use of licensed material is strictly prohibited, whether directly or in context or juxtaposition with specific subject matter.
5. JUDGING
a. The Judging Panel will include representatives from the NUS Faculty of Science, the NUS Centre for the Arts, the NUS Photographic Society and Singapore Press Holdings journalists.
b. Entries will be judged on:
i. the photograph,
ii. the title
iii. the description of the photograph which must be between 50 to 100 words long
c. For People’s Choice, selected entries will be posted on the website for voting by the NUS Faculty of Science community between 1 and 30 September 2009.
NOTE: All photographs submitted, whether winning entry or not, will become the exclusive property of the NUS Faculty of Science.
